Battery-Mounted Tracker Installation Guide

The RouteMate Battery-Mounted Tracker is a compact GPS device that connects directly to the vehicle’s battery, providing real-time tracking and extra security. It supports an optional engine immobilizer that lets fleet admins disable the vehicle remotely — ideal for fleet management and theft prevention.

Note: Set up and configure the device in the RouteMate web app before mounting it. Contact your fleet manager or the RouteMate support team to add the device in the web app settings.

Device Overview

The web app includes an activity log that records who performed which command, giving you full transparency and accountability over admin actions.

Device Setup Steps

  1. Locate a stable, constant 12V/24V power source near the battery.
  2. Power Connection:
    • Red Wire — connect to the 12V/24V battery positive terminal.
    • Black Wire — connect to the battery negative terminal.
  3. Activate the tracker:
    • Start the vehicle. (Note: the device wakes up immediately when wired directly to the battery — starting the vehicle is not strictly required.)
    • The LED will turn on as soon as both wires are connected.
  4. Troubleshooting: If the LED does not blink, verify that the wires are securely connected.

Mount the Battery-Mounted Tracker

Once the device is powered, mount it securely:

  1. Clean the tracker and the mounting surface with a cloth.
  2. Apply the double-sided 3M tape.
  3. Mount the device on a flat surface.
  4. Avoid metal enclosures unless a plastic or fiberglass surface above allows signal penetration.
  5. Ensure the arrow on the device points in the direction of vehicle travel.

Warranty: The tracking device comes with a 1-year warranty.

Engine Immobilizer Integration

The RouteMate Engine Immobilizer enhances fleet security by giving Fleet Managers and Fleet Admins effective control over vehicle starting — deterring theft and unauthorized use. The immobilizer connects to the vehicle’s ignition system.

Important: A certified electrician must install the immobilizer. All connections must be made by a qualified professional to ensure they are secure and properly installed.

Installation Process

  1. Using a digital voltmeter, locate the wire connecting the vehicle’s ignition switch to its starter and cut it.
  2. Wire the relay:
    • Red Wire (VIN DC8-32V) — connect to a constant power source.
    • Black Wire (GND) — connect to a negative terminal.
    • White Wire (RELAY-COM) — connect to one end of the previously cut starter wire.
    • Green Wire (RELAY-NC) — connect to the other end of the previously cut starter wire.
    • Yellow Wire (RELAY-NO) — leave disconnected.

Mounting Recommendations

  • Choose a location away from direct heat sources.
  • Keep away from metal interference.

Troubleshooting

  • Verify wiring — ensure all connections match the installation guide.
  • Test starter circuit — bypass the relay; if the engine starts, check the wiring or replace the relay.
  • Confirm power and ground — ensure a solid ground and no blown fuses.
  • Test immobilizer — toggle ON/OFF in the RouteMate web app to confirm functionality.

Maintenance Notes

  • Do not disassemble the device.
  • Keep away from high temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight to prevent damage.

Important: If the device is not properly installed — particularly to the starter wire — RouteMate is not responsible for any resulting issues.

Final Testing and Verification

Before deploying the immobilizer for fleet use, perform a thorough test through the RouteMate web app:

  1. Consult a certified electrician to verify all connections.
  2. Test immobilizer functionality:
    • Try to start the engine with the immobilizer deactivated — it should start normally.
    • Activate the Engine Immobilizer through the web app.
    • Attempt to start the engine again.
    • If the vehicle does not start after activation, the immobilizer is working correctly.
    • If the vehicle starts after activation, or stops immediately, something is wrong with the wiring.
  3. Test in a safe environment before returning the vehicle to operation.

GPS Beacon Integration

The optional GPS Beacon is a compact, easy-to-use add-on for nearby-vehicle communication.

Powering Up

  1. Open the device casing.
  2. Press and hold the On/Off button for about 3 seconds until the green LED turns on.
  3. Close the casing securely.

Mounting Process

Option 1 — Double-Sided Tape (recommended for quick installation)

  • Ensure the mounting surface is clean and dry.
  • Remove the protective film from the double-sided tape on the back of the beacon.
  • Firmly press the beacon onto the desired location.

Option 2 — Screw Mounting (optional, for permanent installation)

  • Align the beacon with the targeted mounting surface.
  • Use the pre-drilled holes on the beacon’s case as a guide.
  • Secure the beacon with screws.

Additional Notes

  • Mount the beacon where it has a clear line of communication with nearby vehicles.
  • If using 3M tape, regularly check that the device remains securely mounted.
  • Avoid removing and reapplying the double-sided tape — adhesive strength degrades quickly.
