Resolving Unidentified Driving Events
Sometimes the ELD records driving time when no driver is logged in to the app. These periods are called unidentified driving events, and they need to be resolved to keep your logs accurate and compliant.
What Is Unidentified Driving?
Section titled “What Is Unidentified Driving?”Unidentified driving occurs when the ELD device detects that the vehicle is moving but no driver is currently signed in to RouteMate. This can happen for several reasons:
- You forgot to log in before starting to drive.
- You were logged out unexpectedly (for example, due to an app crash or device restart).
- Someone else moved the vehicle without being signed in.
Federal regulations require that all driving time recorded by the ELD be assigned to a driver. That is why these events show up in your logs and need your attention.
Why You Need to Resolve These Events
Section titled “Why You Need to Resolve These Events”Unresolved unidentified driving events can lead to compliance issues during a DOT inspection. Your fleet manager may also reach out to ask you to review and resolve them. Taking care of these promptly keeps your records clean and accurate.
Viewing Unidentified Driving Events
Section titled “Viewing Unidentified Driving Events”When you have unidentified driving periods to review, they will appear in your daily logs. You may also see a notification or alert letting you know there are events that need your attention.
- Open your Daily Logs to see the day in question.
- Look for entries marked as Unidentified Driving. These will be highlighted or flagged differently from your regular log entries.
Claiming Driving as Your Own
Section titled “Claiming Driving as Your Own”If the unidentified driving was actually you (for example, you forgot to log in before moving the truck), you should claim it:
- Tap on the unidentified driving event.
- Select the option to Claim or Accept the driving time.
- Add an annotation or notes explaining why the driving was unidentified (e.g., “Forgot to log in before departing the truck stop”).
- Confirm your selection.
The driving time will then be added to your log for that period.
Note: When you claim unidentified driving, it counts toward your Hours of Service. Make sure you review how it affects your available driving time and required breaks.
Rejecting Events That Are Not Yours
Section titled “Rejecting Events That Are Not Yours”If someone else was driving the vehicle during that period, you should reject the event:
- Tap on the unidentified driving event.
- Select the option to Reject the driving time.
- The event will remain unidentified and your fleet manager can assign it to the correct driver.
Tip: If you share a vehicle with a co-driver or other drivers, communicate with them about unidentified events so the right person claims the time. This avoids confusion and keeps everyone’s logs accurate.
