Connecting to the ELD

The Electronic Logging Device (ELD) is a small device installed in your vehicle that plugs into the engine’s diagnostic port. It automatically records driving data like speed, odometer readings, engine hours, and GPS coordinates. The RouteMate app communicates with the ELD over Bluetooth so your hours-of-service logs are accurate and compliant with FMCSA regulations.

The ELD is a critical part of staying compliant on the road. It:

  • Records driving time automatically — When the vehicle is in motion, the ELD detects it and reports this to the app, which changes your status to Driving.
  • Captures engine data — Speed, RPM, odometer readings, and engine hours are pulled directly from the vehicle’s engine control module.
  • Provides GPS location — The ELD tracks your location so each log entry has an accurate position recorded.
  • Works independently — Even if your phone loses power or the app closes, the ELD continues to record data. It will sync with the app the next time you connect.

Before the app can connect to the ELD, Bluetooth must be turned on:

  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Tap Bluetooth.
  3. Toggle the Bluetooth switch to On (green).
  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Tap Connected devices or Bluetooth (varies by manufacturer).
  3. Toggle the Bluetooth switch to On.

Tip: You can also swipe down from the top of your screen to access quick settings and toggle Bluetooth on from there.

Granting Bluetooth and Location Permissions

Section titled “Granting Bluetooth and Location Permissions”

The first time you use the app, it will ask for permission to use Bluetooth and Location services. You must grant both for the ELD connection to work properly.

  • Bluetooth permission — Allows the app to discover and communicate with the ELD device.
  • Location permission — Required by both iOS and Android for Bluetooth scanning to function, and also used to record your location for log entries. Select “Allow While Using App” or “Always Allow” when prompted.

Note: If you accidentally deny these permissions, you can change them later in your phone’s Settings under the RouteMate app permissions.

The RouteMate app connects to your ELD automatically:

  1. After you select your vehicle, the app searches for the ELD device associated with that truck.
  2. The app pairs with the ELD over Bluetooth — no PIN or manual pairing is needed.
  3. Once connected, you will see a green connection indicator on your dashboard.
  4. The ELD begins streaming live data (speed, location, engine status) to the app.

The entire process usually takes just a few seconds. In most cases, you do not need to do anything — the app handles the connection on its own.

Tip: Make sure you are inside or near the vehicle when the app is trying to connect. Bluetooth has a limited range, typically about 30 feet (10 meters).

Once you are on the home screen, you can always see whether your ELD is connected by checking the connection indicator:

  • Connected (green) — The ELD is paired and actively sending data. Everything is working normally.
  • Disconnected (red or gray) — The app has lost its connection to the ELD. See below for what to do.

If your ELD is disconnected:

  • The app will not automatically record driving time based on vehicle motion.
  • You may need to manually change your duty status to Driving if the vehicle is in motion and the ELD is not connected.
  • Your logs may be flagged for missing data during the disconnected period.
  • The app will display a warning and continue trying to reconnect in the background.

Note: FMCSA regulations require that the ELD be functioning and connected while you are operating a commercial motor vehicle. If your ELD will not connect, notify your fleet manager as soon as possible and follow your company’s malfunction procedures.

If the ELD does not connect right away, try these steps:

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
  2. Make sure you are near the vehicle (within Bluetooth range).
  3. Close the RouteMate app completely and reopen it.
  4. Turn your phone’s Bluetooth off and back on.
  5. Restart your phone if the issue persists.
