Selecting Your Vehicle
After you log in, the app will ask you to select the vehicle you are driving. This is an important step because your electronic logs, duty status changes, and ELD data are all linked to a specific truck. Choosing the right vehicle makes sure your records are accurate and compliant.
Why Vehicle Selection Matters
Section titled “Why Vehicle Selection Matters”The FMCSA requires that your hours-of-service records be associated with the correct vehicle. When you select a vehicle in RouteMate:
- Your driving time is recorded under that vehicle’s ELD.
- Odometer readings and engine hours are pulled from that vehicle’s ELD device.
- Your DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) is tied to the correct truck.
- Your fleet manager can see which driver is assigned to which vehicle at any time.
Note: Always make sure you select the vehicle you are actually driving. Logging hours under the wrong truck can create compliance issues.
Choosing Your Vehicle from the List
Section titled “Choosing Your Vehicle from the List”- After logging in, the Vehicle Selection screen appears automatically.
- You will see a list of vehicles available in your company’s fleet.
- Scroll through the list or use the search bar to find your vehicle by its unit number or name.
- Tap on your vehicle to select it.
- Confirm your selection.
The app will then attempt to connect to the ELD device installed in that vehicle via Bluetooth.
Tip: If you drive the same vehicle regularly, it may appear at the top of the list or be pre-selected based on your last session. This saves you a step on most days.
Changing Vehicles During Your Shift
Section titled “Changing Vehicles During Your Shift”There are times when you may need to switch vehicles during your shift — for example, if you are swapping trailers at a yard or moving to a different truck. To change your vehicle:
- From the home screen, tap the vehicle ID widget or navigate to your vehicle settings.
- Tap Change Vehicle or select a different vehicle from the list.
- Choose your new vehicle and confirm the switch.
When you change vehicles:
- Your current duty status log entry is closed out for the previous vehicle.
- A new log entry is started for the new vehicle.
- The app will attempt to connect to the ELD in the new vehicle via Bluetooth.
Note: Changing vehicles is recorded in your logs. An annotation is automatically added to explain the vehicle switch, which is visible to your fleet manager and during DOT inspections.
No Vehicles in the List?
Section titled “No Vehicles in the List?”If you do not see any vehicles or cannot find your assigned truck:
- Make sure you are logged in to the correct company account.
- Ask your fleet manager to verify that your vehicle is set up in the system and assigned to your profile.
- Check if the vehicle was recently added — you may need to refresh the list by pulling down on the screen.
